Choose the journey before the quote
A one-way 4WD camper trip starts at one depot and ends at another. It can save a long return leg, but the route, vehicle and dates must be offered together. The information on one-way campervan rental availability explains that options vary with vehicle type, season and route. Use the examples below as planning ideas, not a promise that a 4WD is available for your dates.
The right comparison is the complete trip, not simply the one-way fee. A return loop may cost less in hire charges but require extra driving days, fuel and another campsite; a different drop-off might save time but involve a separate flight or transfer. Search both plans with the same dates and party size before committing to onward transport.
Three depot pairs to compare
The following corridors use places that appear in Wicked’s own destination and route material. Stops are options to research, not an itinerary that can be completed in a fixed number of days. Enter the actual depot pair and your travel dates to find whether a suitable 4WD is offered.
| Start and finish | Possible route and stops | What changes your plan |
|---|---|---|
| Alice Springs → Darwin | Stuart Highway via Tennant Creek and Katherine; consider Karlu Karlu / Devils Marbles and Nitmiluk as stops. | Long gaps between services and a tropical finish; verify campsite, road and park access. |
| Perth → Exmouth | North through Geraldton and Carnarvon; Kalbarri, Shark Bay / Denham and Coral Bay are possible detours. | Detours add kilometres and days; compare them against your quoted allowance and return deadline. |
| Broome → Perth | Travel south along the WA coast, with a choice of coastal stops or a separately researched inland detour towards Karijini. | Weather, distances and any proposed unsealed roads influence the route; do not assume all tracks are permitted. |

Example: Alice Springs to Darwin, stage by stage
Use Alice Springs 4x4 pickup information as the supply and collection point, then work north along the Stuart Highway towards Tennant Creek. Karlu Karlu / Devils Marbles Conservation Reserve is an optional stop on the corridor, subject to the current park notice. Tennant Creek is a useful point to reassess the next leg and services rather than assuming every roadhouse operates at the hours you need.
Continue planning through Katherine before the final approach to Darwin. Nitmiluk National Park is a possible detour from Katherine; Kakadu is a further side trip that needs its own time, park-access checks and route approval. The route is about 1,500 km before individual detours according to Wicked’s Alice Springs page. That is a distance reference, not a recommended driving schedule; check your actual map and allowance.
For the return handover, plan your last overnight stop, fuel and unloading around the agreed Darwin depot time. If you add Uluru or Kings Canyon before heading north, put those kilometres into the map first; they are separate excursions rather than stops on the direct Alice Springs–Darwin line.

Example: Perth to Exmouth with optional detours
A coastal plan can use Geraldton and Carnarvon as major stages before Exmouth. Kalbarri and Shark Bay are side trips: decide which matters more if your dates are tight, because visiting both changes the distance and leaves less time around Ningaloo. Coral Bay is another possible stop before Exmouth, with its own accommodation or camping arrangements to check.
Before adding an unsealed access road, sand track or beach, name it when asking Wicked; having a 4WD does not grant permission. Check the WA road travel map for closures and the Parks and Wildlife alerts for park alerts separately. If Coral Bay or a park stop is essential, check camping and access before booking flights, and keep a simpler highway-based alternative.
Compare quotes with a real example
Suppose a group can travel for two weeks and wants to end in Darwin. Search Alice Springs → Darwin first, then Alice Springs → Alice Springs for the same dates. Compare total charges, any one-way charge, kilometre allowance and what extra kilometres would mean. The return trip also needs time to retrace the highway; the one-way trip needs transport after drop-off.
If the one-way search returns no suitable 4WD, change the dates or compare the return loop. Do not treat a depot listed on a map as proof that the model, one-way direction or return time is available. At both ends, confirm the address, hours, handover, fuel and return requirements shown in the offer.

Before leaving sealed roads
A highway itinerary and an unsealed detour are separate decisions. List the exact roads, intended season and vehicle in your enquiry to Wicked. A road authority reporting an open road does not override the vehicle rental agreement; conversely, rental permission does not guarantee the road is open, safe or suitable for the group.
For NT travel, the government recommends checking weather and road reports and planning regular breaks. Download your route before leaving coverage, identify fuel and water points and tell a trusted contact your plans. Never use a suggested stop as a substitute for a current road or park notice.

Common one-way questions
Can I use a 4WD to travel any outback road?
No. Check the road named in your plan against the rental agreement and confirm it with Wicked; also check current road, park and weather information.
Are all depot pairs or 4WD models available one-way?
No. Options and conditions depend on your dates, vehicle, direction and location. Search your exact combination and read the result.
Does an advertised distance include side trips?
Treat a headline distance as a corridor reference only. Map your own campgrounds, park detours and approach to the drop-off depot before comparing it with your quote.
